What Is a Philistine?

Standard

Philistine comes from the name of one of the ancient groups who descended upon Egypt and the Lebanon over 4,000 years ago, the Pelesets. Egyptian artists drew the Pelesets on temple walls and depicted them with tasseled kilts and helmets with a cluster of horsehair, feathers or reeds sticking up.

Much the same way the word “barbarian” is used to describe someone as “uncouth”, philistine is used to portray one who is “uncultured, unenlightened” or “antagonistic to those of artistic or poetic temperament.”
