How Did The Vikings Affect Ireland?

Standard

The Vikings went into Ireland and Scotland and became very possessive of its rivers and streams. Dublin resembled a Danish kingdom. History shows the Vikings as being very aggressive, they are often used as icons for marauders. Danish, Norse and Scandinavian are other names used for the Vikings. Norman is also used and means “Men from the North.” Viking invasions devastated the Native Irish who compared their fate to the Jewish captivity in Babylon. Many Viking invaders married Irish women, settled down and became Christians.

Genealogy: Don’t Let Your Surname Fool You

Standard

When Vikings invaded Ireland, many followed the same pattern as they had in France; they married local girls, adopted the culture and mellowed out. You can recognize a Viking name when you see fitz, which means “son of.” However, as is also common in history, people took the naming style of their new surroundings. Many a Viking who assimilated into Ireland added the prefix Mac, thereby making them appear Irish, just as people Anglicized their surnames in Colonial America after England took New Amsterdam from the Dutch.

Descendants of the Northmen … Britain’s Royal Family

Standard

I don’t imagine they call him Prince William for nothing. I think we can all rest assured that Prince William is indeed a descendant of Duke William of Normandy because the Norman flag has an iconic cross that today shows prominently upon the Queen’s diamond crown.

The Normans who invaded England in 1066 were of the same heritage as the Northmen (think Vikings). Norman derives from the word Northmen. Although the invasion was destructive, deadly to many English troops and King Harold, I’ve read that the Normans who invaded England in 1066 were mellower than the Vikings. History shows the Northmen as violent invaders who settled down and adapted to the lifestyle of those they invaded. In the instance of Normandy, these Northmen had settled into the farming life of the area that is now Northern France and the men had taken French wives. It gets confusing if one desires to have clean-cut lines for culture and ethnicity but life isn’t like that.
