The Medieval Marketplace

During medieval times, the town center was the marketplace. The marketplace was also used for community members to speak their political views and a meeting place where organized groups met. There was often a stone foundation which held a cross and upon the cross’s pedestal one would stand and proselytize, preach, announce, etc. In Rome, the marketplace was the forum and was used for community meetings and place to speak publicly. Today this tradition is a remnant of the past when we enter the grocery market and are greeted by political activists requesting our signatures upon their petitions.
