Time To Hear More Genealogy From African Americans

Standard

I would love to hear more from African Americans about their genealogy pursuits. Whether it’s research they’ve done at a university, the local library, the Internet or following through with promises they made to their grandmother to look into their oral history that’s been passed down for generations. I can see that people are coming to my blogs to read about rh negative blood factor. My recent experience shows me that many of us with rh negative blood factor are searching for answers. Please feel free to chime in as a few others have done. One thing we all have in common is we are the sort of people who are curious. Some folks don’t care about genealogy, where they came from and who they descend from. Others are fascinated, truly “turned on” by genealogy. I’m one of those. And the more diversity I find in my long line of ancestors, the more passionate I become. They were peasants, farmers, royalty, warriors, weavers and mystics. And though they were neolithic and primitive and later maybe sophisticated medievals, the people who came before us have a story to tell. No doubt about it, they existed, just as sure as we’re standing here. What’s your story? What have you heard about those who came before you?

Was Buddha Jewish?

Standard

My son says I think everyone is Jewish. It may seem like that because I was so surprised when I discovered that millions of people have ancient Jewish ancestry and they haven’t a clue. So many times I’ve had a hunch that a famous historical person might have been Jewish and I did a little sleuthing around and sure enough, I found evidence that this person really could have been Jewish. Jews invented monotheism (one God). For thousands of years, they’ve been a very tightly knit religious group. Their symbol is the lion. One day I got to wondering… could Buddha have been influenced by Judaism? I did a little searching and I found no sign of that. The closest I could come was that the lion symbolizes the “moral power of Buddha.”

Genealogy: How Many Times Must I Ask Myself? They Were Jewish? Are You Kidding Me?

Standard

It’s been at least five years, and I’ve written six books on the topic and I still shake my head in disbelief and ask myself, “Are you kidding? Jewish?” Unbelievable. Both my mother and father may have heard hints of it, but it didn’t sink in. I don’t believe they understood that their ancestors were Jewish. What a kick. I only wish they could have lived long enough to understand their colorful genealogy. My father with his bible and Christian teachings, the Christian prayer book he read daily, the bible verses my mother wrote on the family message board, the Sunday school teachings, the pictures of her mother holding flowers for the Lutheran church altar, all paint a picture of devout Christian belief. But before all these practices, is a history of names and clues that uncover a Jewish legacy that dates back thousands of years. Who’d a thunk? Genealogy… Who Were My Ancestors??

Standard

Many are becoming interested in their family genealogy but become discouraged when the trail comes to an end. Who was the father or mother of this ancestor? Where did they come from? They’ve got to be out there somewhere. “Somebody help me!” is a common phrase I see all the time on the ancestry message boards. It could be that your ancestors were Jews and you just don’t quite know how to look for them. Take for example the name Barkin. I think it sounds English but it could have originally been “bar Cohen,” a Jewish name. Also take the common name Silva. Derived from Latin, Silva means forest. Silva is one of the most common surnames in Brazil. Here is an example of a Sephardic Jewish Portuguese name: Tobiau Israel da Silva.

Through the ages, people became very creative in the ways they altered their names. Many non-Jewish names become popular Jewish names but Rabbis were strict about which names a child could use. They were concerned about the practice of naming Jewish babies gentile names so set up creative ways for Jews to have both a sacred Jewish name and a name that fit within the local culture. This sacred name was what descendants could use to recognize that their ancestors were Jewish. It’s unfortunate that too often, these sacred names became lost or abandoned.
