To DNA or Not to DNA… That is the Question

Standard

I recently had my DNA tested and it moved me forward in my knowledge of where my ancestors hailed from. Like everyone else, our earliest ancestors came from Africa and the Middle East. The science is still young, so you are likely to only receive a little information about your family genetics. And you will lose some privacy if you agree to sharing your results. The fun part of sharing is that you meet “cousins.” But they, like most everyone else participating, are wondering “now what?” Our lives are so busy, most of us don’t have the time to dig deeper into the DNA website and see what it has to offer us. I only took one test, with one company and they keep in touch, basically trying to sell me on more opportunities, but I think in the future I’ll try another company and start with them, from scratch. Just to see what they say. It seems easier that way. And it sounds like fun.

Where Did I Get That Rh-Negative Blood Factor?

Standard

In the early eighth century, a Mohammedan people living in northern Africa, the Moors, took boats and entered Southern Spain. The significant make-up of the Moors was Arabic peoples (meaning they descended from the Arabian Peninsula) and Berbers (from North Africa). The Berbers have a high percentage of Rh-Negative blood in their population, compared to other ethnic groups. Of the many surnames in my family tree, Morris is one of them. It’s quite possible that those with Morris ancestry are descendants of the Moors, who invaded Spain in 711 A.D. The French-Latin for Moor is Maurus and the French Greek is Mauros. Sounds like Morris to me.

If you want another example, an old Webster’s dictionary has the following:

morris, n. More fully morris dance. [From earlier morys, morish, Moorish. See Moor.]

Morris dancing was common in Olde England in pageants and May-day games. The dance could have made its way through Spain and into England. My Morris ancestors are Scots-Irish. I can not speak with them about their oral history. I can though, try to piece together an explanation as to why I have Rh-negative blood.  Suellen Ocean is the author of Secret GenealogyA How-to for Tracing Ancient Jewish Ancestry, Secret Genealogy IIUncovering the Jewish Roots of Our Christian Ancestors and Secret Genealogy III From Jewish Anglo-Saxon Tribes to New France Acadians. Genealogy: Who Says You Can’t Go Back?

Standard

Hand Painted Roses Cover Sec Gen III

One of the biggies in world history is the Spanish Inquisition. And let’s not forget that it moved to Portugal and then to Mexico. Because of these Inquisitions, many people are unaware of their Jewish heritage. They haven’t a clue and if you mention it to them, they look at you like you are crazy. The countries just mentioned were not the only ones who persecuted Jews, there were other countries and of course other ethnic groups that were treated horribly. History is so full of wrong doings, seems every group was either persecuted or persecutor. Lately though, Spain has been reaching out to the descendants of Medieval Jews who were driven from their homeland. You’ll find a link to a website at the bottom of this blog. The website has a long list of surnames that Spain wishes to welcome back. There’s even a deal where they will grant you citizenship. I hate to be cynical but history shows many European countries repeatedly kicking the Jews out and then welcoming them back, especially when times got tough because the Jews tended to bring prosperity with them. Spain has been in the news for several years now, having huge financial problems. I can’t help but wonder if this isn’t history repeating itself. And if I was Jewish, would I feel safe returning to Spain in that political environment?

Genealogy: Am I Related to Someone Famous?

Standard

How can we make connections going back hundreds of years when trying to find our ancestors? Especially when they have abandoned their original religion and culture, moved across the seas and started new lives. For many of us, our ancestors have really changed. They have changed so much that we don’t recognize them or refuse to because their lives and belief systems are so foreign. Occasionally, a genealogist will find the same profession or brilliance running in the family tree for hundreds of years. There are people who share the same surname as a great musician or mathematician but can’t make any connection to that person other than the surname. The links are lost to the ages. But keep trying. Read all you can about that famous person and make a timeline. Over the years as you find more information, fill in the timeline. Someday you might find some little piece of historical evidence that proves to you that your own musical genius just happens to run in the family tree.

Genealogy & History: What’s a Judahite?

Standard

A Judahite is an inhabitant of Judah or a member of the tribe of Judah. In other words, a Judahite is a Jew. (Jew is a nickname that came later.) Those who study the bible know that one of Jacob’s sons was Judah and that is where the name of the tribe came from. Jacob is also referred to as “Israel,” which is where the name of the Middle Eastern country came from. To the ancient Judahites, Judah was synonymous with “lion.” A Jewish man could sign documents as either “Judah” or “Lion.” If you have an ancestor who was signing his name as Jacob, he was probably following the Jewish custom.

Genealogy: Have the Name Lion, Lyon, Leo, Leon, Leonard or Lionel in Your Family Tree?

Standard

Lions, lions everywhere… no kidding. People love lions. The ancient Jews loved lions. Jacob, one of the patriarchs of the Jews was referred to as a lion in the Book of Genesis. The lion became the symbol of the Israelite tribe of Jacob’s son Judah so Judah also signifies lion. In times of antiquity, a Jewish man could sign documents as either “Judah” or “Lion.” Eventually Lion became a surname. Leo and Leon are Latin names that mean lion, Leonard is Greek and means “strong or brave as a lion” and Lionel is a French name that means “young lion.” Having one of these lion names certainly does not make one Jewish but I would not rule it out.

Genealogy: Have the Name Hannah in Your Family Tree? Ann, Anne, Anna?

Standard

Millions of us have ancestors with variations of the name Anne. But did you know that Hannah is a Hebrew name meaning Grace? Hannah was the mother of Samuel but his birth did not come easily for her. The story is … she had to pray for him. Every year Hannah made a pilgrimage to the Sanctuary at Shiloh and when she did, she said a prayer for a son and vowed that she would dedicate him to the Lord. Hannah’s story is a small part of biblical history. She is also remembered as taking Samuel a little coat every year.
