Genealogy… the Signs of Slavery

Standard

Secret GenealogyGood God, who in the world wants to think about slave markets when they do their genealogy? It is a most unpleasant thought. We all know though, that those “markets” existed. On a New Orleans building in 1895, the sign was still there… Slaves for Sale. You would think someone would have at least painted over it. It’s not like it was an ad for aftershave or soda pop. And it had been about thirty years since the end of the war. Ironically, a black man bought the building and ran it as a hotel.SecretGenealogyIIFrontCover

Abraham Lincoln visited one of those slave markets and because he did not like what he saw, slavery ended with the Civil War. When he was young, Abe went down the Mississippi River on a flat boat loaded with produce. After he sold his produce, he went to a slave mart with an acquaintance named Hanks. After they left, Abe was angrier than hell. “Hanks,” he said, “if ever I get a chance to hit that thing, I’ll hit it hard, by the ever living God.”

Hand Painted Roses Cover Sec Gen IIIIf you’re searching for black ancestry, the signs of slavery are everywhere. I don’t know if you ever get used to it. But if you have anything pertaining to slaves or slavery to bring to the genealogical field; family letters, wills, oral history… please, please, please share it. We owe it to those who are unable to tell their own stories.Kindle COVER Secret Genealogy IV

Rh-Negative Blood types in African Americans… a Cluster? Yes

Standard

Secret GenealogyA cluster is a bunch, group, collection, band or mass of something. And we have it, right here, on this blog site. Hundreds of people are coming to this blog to read about Rh-negative blood factor in African-Americans. Each week, the numbers grow larger. I’m assuming the people are black, looking for the reason why their blood is Rh-negative. Or maybe not the reason why, but who their ancestors were that gave them this unusual blood type. I’ve been doing more research (I’m working on Secret Genealogy V – Africans in Our Family Tree), and honestly, I don’t know if I’ll be able to tell you much more than I already have but I’ll keep working on it. We’ve got to prove we’re not aliens from another planet. That was a joke… but you know what they say… many a truth is said in jest. Who are we anyway?Hand Painted Roses Cover Sec Gen III

Where Did the Nazis Get Ideas For Racism? From America…

Standard

Militant forms of racial hygiene had been brewing since the 1920’s and continued to grow as the National Socialist Party emerged with Adolph Hitler as their leader. The Nazis took it to the extreme but they weren’t the only ones. When Darwinists in Germany began setting up racial hygiene programs, and looking for comparisons, they looked to America.

In Colonial America’s French Louisiana, it was stated in the laws pertaining to slaves and their masters, “We forbid our white subjects, of both sexes, to marry with the blacks, under the penalty of being fined and subjected to some other arbitrary punishment.” And it was a long time before it became legal for blacks and whites to marry. Add to that, in America’s southern states there was a one drop rule, referring to blood, meaning that even one drop of black blood made someone black, period. This strict definition and the persecution and oppression that came with it was considered by Third Reich doctors when they set up Germany’s racial hygiene programs. German laws were such that if a citizen was one-eighth Jewish, they were eligible to marry a full-blooded German. When Third Reich doctors studied American laws regarding marriage between blacks and whites and subsequently created Germany’s racial hygiene laws, Nazi doctors thought Americans were the ones who were strict. And they studied carefully the sterilization of black women in America’s prisons.

Originally, the German racial hygiene movement, in the late 1800’s, was not as malicious as that of the Nazi era. Believe it or not, when their racial charts were set up, Jews were not excluded from the German ideal but were included in their definition of a superior race. Let’s hope the world grows to understand that a man who has a weakness in one area probably has greater qualities in another. Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

Can’t Find Info on an Ancestor? Maybe She Was a Slave

Standard

The UGRR mentions Virginia, Maryland, North and South Carolina time and time again as territories of bondage for African-Americans. During the 1850’s the office of the UGRR in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom in Canada and sometimes New York and Boston. It’s difficult to piece together history if all we have is a name, a birthplace and a birth year. Some don’t even have that. Mississippi and Louisiana are well-known slave states but remember that Virginia and Maryland were as well.
