Who Were the Old Southerners?

Standard

Originally, the southern part of America was home to Indian tribes. After their land was “ceded,” the old south was primarily populated by the English. Latinos populated the land previously held by Mexico, Spain and France. Eventually, other ethnic groups migrated into these Latin areas and Latinos became minorities. Other ethnicities who populated the “old south” were the Welsh, Irish, Scots and Germans. There were French protestants, Huguenots who populated America’s early south, some of who may have been Jewish and hiding their ethnicity to escape persecution. I Can’t Picture My Ancestors in a Synagogue

Standard

There are images ingrained in our minds and more than enough stereotypes about what our ancestors may have been like. Life was different for them. Many of them stepped into a synagogue instead of a church. They also stepped up into carriages instead of cars and huddled in front of outdoor fires instead of flipping on central heating. Today, there are Christians who uncover a secret, their ancestors were Jewish. And they embrace it. Genealogy is not religion; it studies the religious patterns of our ancestors, opening up colorful visions of history. With all the new technology at our fingertips, we collaborate with others and unveil surprises. Sometimes that means discovering that our family tree was originally made of members who practiced Judaism. Genealogy: But They Went to Christian Church Every Sunday

Standard

Amateur Genealogists find it difficult to believe that their ancestors were Jewish. They see proof that Great-great-grand-mama was enrolled in a Christian congregation and that the rest of the family continued the tradition, so there is no way she could have been Jewish. Today we have greater access to shared ancestral and historical records and with an open mind and the instinct to follow the right leads, we can look back on those traditions and see where our Jewish ancestors reached a fork in the road and took a new path to Christianity. Genealogy: Clues for Finding Hidden Ancestry

Standard

After Spain and Portugal’s Inquisitions, Jews who forcibly became “New Christians” and “Crypto-Jews,” formed themselves into tightly-knit groups of “friends” and family, making it understandable that once you get to your family tree you should see other Jewish names. Watch for the point when they began Anglicizing their names. Look for even the slightest change of spelling and especially any surname change. In the 1700 and 1800s, cousins sometimes married. This could be a clue; Jewish families wanted their children to marry other Jews. No doubt, there were situations where the young couple may have been unaware that they were Jewish, yet both sets of parents knew.

Amsterdam? No. But Yes.

Standard

It’s Amstelredam; at least it used to be. Amstel is the correct name for the river that flows through the city, the “dam” part of the name refers to a dam (or dike) which Hollanders built in order to reside in this low lying seacoast area. Populated since ancient times, before the eleventh century Amsterdam was a fishing village. Due to its proximity in the far north, Spain and Portugal’s Inquisitions drove immigrants to seek asylum there, helping to create a rich cultural diversity. A fabulous place to vacation, Amsterdam is teeming with beautiful people riding bicycles and visually is a city beyond compare. Take time to visit Amsterdam’s myriad of museums and historical sights and gaze with fascination at the mansions adorning the canals built during the city’s Golden Era.
