The Series the Vikings

Standard

Secret GenealogyI’ve just completed watching the latest from the television hit series, “The Vikings.” My husband and I have enjoyed each season, even though they are extremely violent and I can’t help but wonder what impressions the violence makes on an unstable mind. The series is an attempt to entertain and inform us of the history, (the history channel produced the earlier seasons.) But now for 2016, a big Hollywood studio has taken over. The change downgraded it but not too badly. It is still the same characters that are fun to watch. Those endearing, lovable sword wielding butchers that we’ve come to know as Vikings.

One of the most important aspects of the show, to me, is that it drives home the fact that earthlings were and still are, very multi-cultural. Slave trading and the ancient Silk Road brought opportunity for admixture. If you listen carefully to the names of historical figures, you’ll hear, as I do, the name of a princess, Judith. Might that be a Jewish name? In Ye Olde England?Hand Painted Roses Cover Sec Gen III

Where Exactly is “The Promised Land?”

Standard

Where exactly is “The Promised Land?” And what’s all the singing about the River Jordan? Isn’t it interesting that the River Jordan is sung about by so many people from such diverse backgrounds? It was over three-thousand-years-ago above the River Jordan that Moses looked down upon the promised land of Canaan (Kenaan). Over three- thousand-years-ago and folks are singing about it like it was yesterday? What’s up with that? And where exactly is this Promised Land Canaan? That is not easy to answer but it corresponds vaguely to the area that was called Palestine before the state of Israel was born.

David, Davis, Davidson… a Link to King David or Did Your Family Just Like the Name?

Standard

I asked a Jewish friend if she had known any Arabs named David. “No”, she said, “too much of a king of the Jews name.” Good point. There are Christian Arabs but David is not a common name although it is mentioned in a list of masculine Arabic names as Da’ud or Dawud meaning “beloved” or in the naming of a son after the Prophet David whom I assume they mean King David. I can think of five Davids in my immediate extended family, either first or middle names. Most of us know a David. Yes, it is a common name and who knows how many Davids were named because it was a beautiful name? But who knows how many Davids were named because it was a continued pattern, whether conscious or not to retain Jewish identity? Similar sounding surnames David, Davidson, Dovid, Davids, Davi, Davis, Daves, Davin, Davins, Davala, Daviu, Davies, Daud, Daud Ibn, Davila, Davilla and Davision. One French ancestor of mine is “David des Marets”. Marets sounds and looks like “Marais” (swamp), the name of the old Jewish Quarter on the Left Bank in Paris. And similar to Marais is Lake Mariout, also spelled Maryut or Mariut, near Alexandria Egypt where there was an ancient Essene community on the shores of this lake and an area where thousands of Jews lived. Be open-minded to various spellings and go with the way a name sounds.
