The Curiosities of Rh-negative Blood

Standard

This week I received a comment on this blog:

“Hello..I see I’m not the only one!..I am also a 30 yr old Africa American with Blackfoot ancestors and yes, Rh-negative blood. Have you found any further findings about as to how our blood type came to be?? I admit my life has changed quit a bit also. I’m soo curious NOW!”

I love the enthusiasm that people have regarding their ancestry. I too get excited, even after all these years. There are various speculations about how this blood type came to be. If I had to give a simple answer, I would tell those with Rh-negative blood type that it probably means that you have British ancestors, particularly Scottish or Irish. I don’t think though, that the short answer is good enough. I have spent more time trying to figure out the history (I too am Rh-negative) and have devoted another chapter to it in the newest book in this series, Secret Genealogy V, Black, White and Hamite; Ancestors of Color in Our Family Trees. The paperback version is available here:

Old World Fantasies About Rh Negative Blood Type…

Standard

Kindle COVER Secret Genealogy IVI can’t help but wonder where all of the people are coming from who come to this blog to read about Rh negative blood and how it might relate to their being Jewish. My research led me to believe that Rh negative is not common in the Jewish population, except small populations of Oriental Jews in Israel and in Iran who were there when it was called Persia and probably before. It’s a funny thing, this blood type. It’s found in North Africa (think Berbers and Morocco) and goes up into the Basque regions of Spain and France. I got my dusty old globe out and put my finger on Morocco and spun it around. It’s easy to see how the ships that carried immigrants and slaves to the New World sailed right up to Florida and New England. The curiosity though is wondering who these ancestors were that gave us this unusual blood type. It could have been a Persian Jewish slave trader during the 1600’s who took liberties with his female slaves. It could be a desert roaming Bedouin of the Berber tribe who went with the Muslims when they conquered Spain long, long ago. It could be someone from the Basque population, those people whose language and this rare blood type conjure up unusual theories as to who they are and where they came from. It could come from a nomadic trader, long ago, traveling the spice route, having a love affair with a woman from one of the above mentioned groups.

Get a world map out and put your finger on Morocco. Run it to the west and you will wind up in the southern reaches of America. Run it a little north and you’ll reach Spain and France and the Basque region. Run it to the east and you’ll reach Iran, where long, long ago, small groups of Jews made their homes and perhaps their descendants are still there today. That brings up another question. Who were these ancient Iranian Jews and why were they in Persia? Was it even called Persia back then?

I’m working on a new book, Secret Genealogy V, Black & White Ancestors in Our Family Trees. I’ll see what I can find out and if I discover anything, I’ll include it. Until then… we keep wondering and wondering…

Adding More Intrigue to the Rh-negative Blood Factor

Standard

Secret Genealogy

I’ve been digging around in old encyclopedias again. But just for the record, they’re respectable and very well written… in their day. Correction… I respect them today and am in awe of how advanced the information was. Much of what I read in a fifty-year-old encyclopedia, is just hitting the news today. What’s funny is when I find things written that would not be written today. Not. Politically. Correct. But oh how I love it, especially this:

The men of the Basque provinces are stern and uncompromising; they are devoutly religious.

That is stereotyping and not politically correct, so we don’t do that, or we try not to. Stern, uncompromising, devoutly religious… anyone you know? That describes many people of different ethnicities and it is not an exclusive trait of men. But that said, if you’re Rh-negative, you probably know by now that the highest rates of Rh-negative blood occur in the Basque populations of France and Spain. Close to two-thirds of the Basque population carry one of the (r) negative genes.SecretGenealogyIIFrontCover

These “stern” Basque men, may have been our ancestors. What the encyclopedia has to say about their language is even more intriguing than the personality traits a writer penned fifty-years ago. The Basque language has no relationship to any other European language, including that of Spain and France, where their homeland is today. The researcher wrote that, “It is commonly thought that Basque is derived from the language of the ancient Iberians.” Next time you’re required to check mark a box for ethnicity, select “other” and write… Ancient Iberian.

Where Did I Get That Rh-Negative Blood Factor?

Standard

In the early eighth century, a Mohammedan people living in northern Africa, the Moors, took boats and entered Southern Spain. The significant make-up of the Moors was Arabic peoples (meaning they descended from the Arabian Peninsula) and Berbers (from North Africa). The Berbers have a high percentage of Rh-Negative blood in their population, compared to other ethnic groups. Of the many surnames in my family tree, Morris is one of them. It’s quite possible that those with Morris ancestry are descendants of the Moors, who invaded Spain in 711 A.D. The French-Latin for Moor is Maurus and the French Greek is Mauros. Sounds like Morris to me.

If you want another example, an old Webster’s dictionary has the following:

morris, n. More fully morris dance. [From earlier morys, morish, Moorish. See Moor.]

Morris dancing was common in Olde England in pageants and May-day games. The dance could have made its way through Spain and into England. My Morris ancestors are Scots-Irish. I can not speak with them about their oral history. I can though, try to piece together an explanation as to why I have Rh-negative blood.  Suellen Ocean is the author of Secret GenealogyA How-to for Tracing Ancient Jewish Ancestry, Secret Genealogy IIUncovering the Jewish Roots of Our Christian Ancestors and Secret Genealogy III From Jewish Anglo-Saxon Tribes to New France Acadians. Genealogy: To D or not to D… that is the question

I’ve never been interested in checking my DNA. I thought it might take the fun out of all my exploring but lately I’ve been thinking it would be interesting. Those who have spoken with me about their experience, have said positive things about it. Because I delve deeper into genealogy, I believe I could benefit from the connections that the test provides. Something that is important to me is sharing what I know of my ancestry with those who have the same surname. Not that I want to give a plug to ancestry.com but I would love to see who I share DNA with and they make some nice connections for you if you go through 23andme. At least that’s the impression I get, even though not all reviews are positive. I’m in no hurry to sign up but sometime this year, I may give it a try. I’ll let you know. Maybe we are related.

Genealogy… Scenarios of Rh Negative Blood Factor

Standard

I like it that people wind up on my blog looking for answers about Rh Negative blood factor. Questions arise, like… why don’t my brother and sister have this blood type?

To be the sole member in the family with Rh Negative blood doesn’t mean you are adopted or that your mother had an affair. Blood type is inherited and all we can do is speculate where it originated. I search for answers to my own Rh Negative mystery and have come up with several hypothesis. Here’s the latest. Perhaps it will stimulate your imagination and help you unravel your mystery.

Here goes… My great-great-grandmother was a Morris. Morisco means Moor, particularly of Spanish descent. Let’s assume that Morris tells me that my ancestors were Moors. The words are similar enough. The Moors were a multi-ethnic group consisting of Arabs who came from the Arabian Peninsula and natives of northern Africa. The North African natives who were Moors were called Berbers. Some Berbers are light skinned and some are black and they have high percentages of Rh Negative blood. (For more on the Berbers see Secret Genealogy II, the Jewish Roots of Our Christian Ancestors.) In 711, the Moors got onto boats, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar, landed in Andalusia (Southern Spain), and conquered the Iberian Peninsula.

This history brought the Berbers to Spain and along with them, their Rh Negative blood type. You can leave it to your imagination how the blood type progressed. Let’s use the example of my great-grandmother Morris whose blood type I’ll never know. She was either Scottish or Scots Irish. Where her ancestors came from I do not know but let’s say they descended from Iberians (Spaniards) who immigrated to Scotland and eventually to America.

This is only one of my theories. Another is that I have an ancestor who was an Oriental Jew. Another theory is that I have a Basque ancestor, which fits because the Basque people live along the borderlands of France and Spain.

Another option could be through my father’s ancient ancestors. The surname Rotin is a Sephardic Jewish name from the kingdom of Murcia (in Spain). Murcia is right next to Andalusia. Rh Negative blood could easily have made its way there during the Moorish invasion of 711.

Arabian Peninsula to Northern Africa to Spain to Scotland to America. Imagining different scenarios is fun. Don’t forget Rh Negative blood runs through England’s Royal Family, a very multi-ethnic group due to their creating alliances through marriage with other foreign Royals.

Rh Negative Blood Type? You’re Not the Only One Asking Questions

Standard

I am an rh-negative blood type so find the topic interesting. So much so that I did a little research and added the information into two of my genealogy books. When I began researching blood types, I had no idea there were others like me, who wonder about this unusual blood type. On my dashboard here at WordPress, I am able to see what people type into a search field that makes them wind up on my blog site. Lately I’ve seen a large increase in people who are researching this rh factor. “rh negative blood common in jewish people?” “rh negative hebrew” “rh blood typing genealogy” “black people and o negative” are all common these days, so much so that I will continue my own research into the answers to their and my questions. Who are we? We are definitely special, but so is everyone for some reason or another, maybe the correct word is unusual or rare. The Basque population has a large, perhaps the largest percentage of rh factor and not far from where they reside, on the Moroccan side of the waters, Berbers have a high concentration of rh factor. And not far from there we have Iran where ancient Iranian Jews have a high percentage of rh factor, as do Oriental Jews. So if you look at a map, although these areas are not right next to each other, they are close enough for ancients to have travelled to, in an era when selling and exchanging slaves was commonplace. Were our ancestors Jews or were they Bedouins? Did the Basque travel to America and leave genetic traces behind? I kinda like the idea that we descend from “Ancient Alien Ancestors.” Really? How cool is that? Or not. We really would be special wouldn’t we? I’ll keep watching for clues and continue writing about them in my genealogy books. Until then, let it be a reminder that there were others long, long ago who walked on this planet whose characteristics we now embody.
