We Can Thank the Dutch for Religious Tolerance… They Were the First

Standard

We can thank the Dutch for religious tolerance. They were the first. Before New York was New York it was New Amsterdam and we know what that means. “The Dutch.” Now mind you, America’s early Dutch were severe in their religious beliefs. What religion wasn’t severe back in the late 1600’s? But thank you Holland for being the first European country to practice religious tolerance.

Holland’s openness to all forms of religion continues to this day but make no mistake, there never was nor ever will be an absolute or unanimous way of thinking. During the Rembrandt-era, Holland’s Jews were impacted by the anti-Semitism of out-spoken Christian religious leaders. There was even strife between Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews. And recently, there has been an uptick in political movements that have less tolerance for immigrants and the religious diversity that they bring. In spite of this, tolerance is the norm in Holland.

Genealogy… Surnames and Nobility, Understanding “De”

Standard

For quite some time, in Europe, “De” was used to distinguish those of noble birth. The right to use it was granted by the king. “De” is French and it means “of.” It is used in many surnames. If the surname started with a vowel it was written as d’. It is also seen as “des” and “des la.” It’s important to bear in mind that for example, the name Des Marets means “of Marets” and there may be instances where the surname will be listed under Marets, because occasionally the prefix is disregarded. The name Des Marets is also seen as Demaree. A change like that happens when the descendants merge the prefix with the suffix. Personally, I prefer the beauty of the ancient French name, Des Marets.

If you run across the prefix “te” as in “te Bonte” it probably means the same as “de.” “Te” is from the Old Dutch and is used to signify that something is located at, in or on.

Adding More Intrigue to the Rh-negative Blood Factor

Standard

Secret Genealogy

I’ve been digging around in old encyclopedias again. But just for the record, they’re respectable and very well written… in their day. Correction… I respect them today and am in awe of how advanced the information was. Much of what I read in a fifty-year-old encyclopedia, is just hitting the news today. What’s funny is when I find things written that would not be written today. Not. Politically. Correct. But oh how I love it, especially this:

The men of the Basque provinces are stern and uncompromising; they are devoutly religious.

That is stereotyping and not politically correct, so we don’t do that, or we try not to. Stern, uncompromising, devoutly religious… anyone you know? That describes many people of different ethnicities and it is not an exclusive trait of men. But that said, if you’re Rh-negative, you probably know by now that the highest rates of Rh-negative blood occur in the Basque populations of France and Spain. Close to two-thirds of the Basque population carry one of the (r) negative genes.SecretGenealogyIIFrontCover

These “stern” Basque men, may have been our ancestors. What the encyclopedia has to say about their language is even more intriguing than the personality traits a writer penned fifty-years ago. The Basque language has no relationship to any other European language, including that of Spain and France, where their homeland is today. The researcher wrote that, “It is commonly thought that Basque is derived from the language of the ancient Iberians.” Next time you’re required to check mark a box for ethnicity, select “other” and write… Ancient Iberian.

What Do Back-to-the Land Hippies and Nazis Have in Common?

Standard

I can’t help but be amused when I read about Nazi philosophies and find the same values in fashion during America’s back-to-the-land movement of the sixties and seventies. If it were only a couple of similarities, I wouldn’t think much of it but there were more than one. What are they? Well… during the Nazi period, it was frowned on for women to smoke. Hitler didn’t smoke, nor did he drink and it was forbidden to do it around him. Living naturally was imperative to deep-thinking followers of Nazism, as were wholesome foods, like whole grains. And it was frowned on for women to wear make-up. The Nazis even passed laws to protect endangered species.

I’m very familiar with America’s back-to-the-land movement. I lived it. Still do. People like me, we swim in the river, try to eat only whole grains, don’t smoke, don’t wear a lot of make-up… you get the picture. I find it interesting that during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, a German back-to-the-land movement was intertwined with the fascist movement of the Third Reich. But what was happening in Germany was a desire to return to (and or protect) the traditional Germanic way of life. What was different about the American back-to-the-land movement was its emphasis on loving others and embracing other cultures. Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

France, America, Germany… Racists Share Ideas

Standard

France wasn’t the first to persecute Jews but she certainly had laws for dealing with blacks and Jews, and those laws came to America with the Colonial era. In 1685, France created a how-to set of laws for treating slaves in French Caribbean colonies. Later, in 1724 based on those laws, the Louisiana Code Noir was created. Of the fifty-four articles in the Louisiana code, the first one was, “the expulsion of Jews from the colony.”

In medieval Europe, Jewish persecution was widespread. Switzerland, Spain, Russia, England and Germany, were just some of the countries that gave momentum to the Jewish Diaspora. In the slave code, we find that slaves were forbidden to “gather in crowds either by day or by night, under the pretext of a wedding, or for any other cause.” In medieval Holland, Jews were so severely restricted from gathering, it was an enormous undertaking to bury their dead and hold funerals. In Colonial America, unruly slaves were branded with the fleur de lis and in Nazi Germany, Jews were tattooed with numbers on their arms or forced to wear the Star of David on their clothes. The idiosyncrasies between racist governments are so similar, it’s obvious that ideas were passed around and shared.

Where Did the Nazis Get Ideas For Racism? From America…

Standard

Militant forms of racial hygiene had been brewing since the 1920’s and continued to grow as the National Socialist Party emerged with Adolph Hitler as their leader. The Nazis took it to the extreme but they weren’t the only ones. When Darwinists in Germany began setting up racial hygiene programs, and looking for comparisons, they looked to America.

In Colonial America’s French Louisiana, it was stated in the laws pertaining to slaves and their masters, “We forbid our white subjects, of both sexes, to marry with the blacks, under the penalty of being fined and subjected to some other arbitrary punishment.” And it was a long time before it became legal for blacks and whites to marry. Add to that, in America’s southern states there was a one drop rule, referring to blood, meaning that even one drop of black blood made someone black, period. This strict definition and the persecution and oppression that came with it was considered by Third Reich doctors when they set up Germany’s racial hygiene programs. German laws were such that if a citizen was one-eighth Jewish, they were eligible to marry a full-blooded German. When Third Reich doctors studied American laws regarding marriage between blacks and whites and subsequently created Germany’s racial hygiene laws, Nazi doctors thought Americans were the ones who were strict. And they studied carefully the sterilization of black women in America’s prisons.

Originally, the German racial hygiene movement, in the late 1800’s, was not as malicious as that of the Nazi era. Believe it or not, when their racial charts were set up, Jews were not excluded from the German ideal but were included in their definition of a superior race. Let’s hope the world grows to understand that a man who has a weakness in one area probably has greater qualities in another. Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

Accept Christianity or We’ll Take Your Land

Standard

There were many Christian Crusades. One particular Germanic Crusade enabled aggressive Christians to take the fertile land of Slavic people. The rallying cry of the invaders was simple, convert to Christianity or we will take your land… and they did. Those who refused to convert were killed. When this Crusade reached an ancient community of Polish Slavic peasants who played flutes in the meadows, the Slavs had to learn to make swords and face the Crusaders. The Germanic invaders did not stop. Poland was besieged repeatedly. By 1772, Poland lost almost 100,000 square miles of territory to Austria, Prussia and Russia. By 1795, Poland was entirely overrun, speaking or singing in Polish was outlawed and dire consequences were imposed on children who did not say their prayers in German. The people were imprisoned and spied on for no reason and many innocent people were sent to Siberia to work in the mines. By WWI, it was worse. Nevertheless, in 1919 the Treaty of Versailles reunited Poland. But by the next year (1920), it had been invaded by Russia. With the help of women and children, the Polish people fought the Russians back. By the 1930’s the Polish people still had independence but minorities were not always treated kindly. With WWII came the Nazi invasion. The Nazis filled trains with Jews and whomever they deemed unfit and gassed them to death. Today, next to Malta, Poland is the most Catholic country in Europe.
