To DNA or Not to DNA… That is the Question

Standard

I recently had my DNA tested and it moved me forward in my knowledge of where my ancestors hailed from. Like everyone else, our earliest ancestors came from Africa and the Middle East. The science is still young, so you are likely to only receive a little information about your family genetics. And you will lose some privacy if you agree to sharing your results. The fun part of sharing is that you meet “cousins.” But they, like most everyone else participating, are wondering “now what?” Our lives are so busy, most of us don’t have the time to dig deeper into the DNA website and see what it has to offer us. I only took one test, with one company and they keep in touch, basically trying to sell me on more opportunities, but I think in the future I’ll try another company and start with them, from scratch. Just to see what they say. It seems easier that way. And it sounds like fun.

Genealogy: Have the Name Michael in Your Family Tree?

Standard

There are quite a few Michaels mentioned in the bible but one of the most important was Michael the special guardian of the Hebrews. He was considered an Archangel, which means he was an angel of high rank. Michael argued with Satan over Moses’ body and Michael also fought a dragon in heaven. The name may mean, “Who is like God.” There are other biblical Michaels besides Michael the Archangel.

Do Your Dead Ancestors Beckon You? Take the Leap…

Standard

If you can’t take a few leaps, you are not ready to begin the quest. At first your clues seem outrageous. “No, it can’t be. No, no, no,” you say to yourself while shaking your head. You confide in friends and family and they think you’re a little out there. The lure to find out who your ancestors were is magnetic. It is as if the ancestors beckon you from the “other world”.

What’s the Difference Between Scot and Scotch?

Standard

The English and the Americans may say “Scotch” but in Scotland it’s “Scots”. (Scotch is whiskey). It’s easy to be confused, “Scotch” whiskey is made by the Scottish and there were many colonial immigrants to America known as Scotch-Irish, really Scots-Irish. If you are fortunate enough to go to Scotland you may want to pronounce it as Scot instead of Scotch. The Scotch version has been accepted as colloquial but the literary version and more pleasing to the Scots is … Scot.

Hidden Jewish Ancestry, Is it Just in the Name?

Standard

The variety of surname prefixes and endings that came about in the Netherlands after the Inquisition could be a study in itself. There’s “van” and “van de” or “van der”. There’s the French prefixes of “de”, “d’” and “ver”. There are the endings of “sz” or “x”. The “sz” sounds Eastern European and could very well be, as during this period there were immigrants flocking to the Netherlands to take advantage of all the busy seaports and the work available. Those having the skills necessary to construct homes and businesses for Holland’s wealthy merchant class would have found work. If they were Jewish they would have needed to hide it so they could join the trade guild. They would have hid it behind either Catholicism or Protestantism, depending on which one was safer at the time.
