Genealogy… Did Your Ancestors Speak Spanish? Who Were They?

Standard

During Medieval times, Moors and Jews were banished from Spain. When they left, they wound up in far distant lands, including America. But some of the closer regions they went to were Turkey, North Africa and Greece. What’s interesting is that because these exiled people spoke Spanish, they brought their language with them. You may have to listen hard for it, but in these regions, coming from the mouths of their descendants, you may find a corrupted form of their ancient Spanish language. Hundreds of years ago, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella exiled them but they could not exile the language.

It was in 1501 when all Mohammedans who would not convert to Christianity were purged from Spain. It was in 1492 when the Jews were purged. I have not read anywhere that Americans are discovering ancient Mohammedan ancestry but there is an ever-growing group of Catholics who have uncovered their Jewish heritage. Today in America, the most commonly spoken language other than English, in almost every state is Spanish. A huge swath of America was at one time, “New Spain.”  Suellen Ocean is the author of Secret GenealogyA How-to for Tracing Ancient Jewish Ancestry, Secret Genealogy IIUncovering the Jewish Roots of Our Christian Ancestors and Secret Genealogy III From Jewish Anglo-Saxon Tribes to New France Acadians.
