Tracing the Origins of Rh-Negative Blood Through Jewish Ancestry

Standard

Secret GenealogyI remember the day I saw my family surname on a list of Sephardic Jewish names. The name was listed as being from the ancient Spanish kingdom of Murcia. One letter was different, they used an “i” instead of an “e” but there was no mistaking it, the pronunciation was identical. But what did it mean? Could there be a connection? Of all the countries my patriarchal ancestors hailed from, Spain was not one of them. But it reinforced my suspicions that the family may have been Jewish many generations back.

From the regions that surround her, Spain has attracted people to settle her lands. The Moors controlled Spain for several centuries. When we think of Spaniards we might picture a dark-haired and dark-eyed people with olive skin but blue eyes and fair skin like that of many Germans and Scandinavians represent the Spanish people, as do others. But an old encyclopedia states that “many Murcians… are very dark — a legacy of Moorish ancestors.” Well there you go. When the Moors, with their chieftain Tan’k, overran the Spanish kingdom in 711, there were Berbers among them. Natives of northern Africa, Berbers have a population high in Rh-negative blood.

There are a variety of explanations why someone has Rh-negative blood. Confirming them is not so easy. Our ancestral immigration and invading patterns happened a very long time ago.

What Do Back-to-the Land Hippies and Nazis Have in Common?

Standard

I can’t help but be amused when I read about Nazi philosophies and find the same values in fashion during America’s back-to-the-land movement of the sixties and seventies. If it were only a couple of similarities, I wouldn’t think much of it but there were more than one. What are they? Well… during the Nazi period, it was frowned on for women to smoke. Hitler didn’t smoke, nor did he drink and it was forbidden to do it around him. Living naturally was imperative to deep-thinking followers of Nazism, as were wholesome foods, like whole grains. And it was frowned on for women to wear make-up. The Nazis even passed laws to protect endangered species.

I’m very familiar with America’s back-to-the-land movement. I lived it. Still do. People like me, we swim in the river, try to eat only whole grains, don’t smoke, don’t wear a lot of make-up… you get the picture. I find it interesting that during the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, a German back-to-the-land movement was intertwined with the fascist movement of the Third Reich. But what was happening in Germany was a desire to return to (and or protect) the traditional Germanic way of life. What was different about the American back-to-the-land movement was its emphasis on loving others and embracing other cultures. Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

France, America, Germany… Racists Share Ideas

Standard

France wasn’t the first to persecute Jews but she certainly had laws for dealing with blacks and Jews, and those laws came to America with the Colonial era. In 1685, France created a how-to set of laws for treating slaves in French Caribbean colonies. Later, in 1724 based on those laws, the Louisiana Code Noir was created. Of the fifty-four articles in the Louisiana code, the first one was, “the expulsion of Jews from the colony.”

In medieval Europe, Jewish persecution was widespread. Switzerland, Spain, Russia, England and Germany, were just some of the countries that gave momentum to the Jewish Diaspora. In the slave code, we find that slaves were forbidden to “gather in crowds either by day or by night, under the pretext of a wedding, or for any other cause.” In medieval Holland, Jews were so severely restricted from gathering, it was an enormous undertaking to bury their dead and hold funerals. In Colonial America, unruly slaves were branded with the fleur de lis and in Nazi Germany, Jews were tattooed with numbers on their arms or forced to wear the Star of David on their clothes. The idiosyncrasies between racist governments are so similar, it’s obvious that ideas were passed around and shared.

Where Did the Nazis Get Ideas For Racism? From America…

Standard

Militant forms of racial hygiene had been brewing since the 1920’s and continued to grow as the National Socialist Party emerged with Adolph Hitler as their leader. The Nazis took it to the extreme but they weren’t the only ones. When Darwinists in Germany began setting up racial hygiene programs, and looking for comparisons, they looked to America.

In Colonial America’s French Louisiana, it was stated in the laws pertaining to slaves and their masters, “We forbid our white subjects, of both sexes, to marry with the blacks, under the penalty of being fined and subjected to some other arbitrary punishment.” And it was a long time before it became legal for blacks and whites to marry. Add to that, in America’s southern states there was a one drop rule, referring to blood, meaning that even one drop of black blood made someone black, period. This strict definition and the persecution and oppression that came with it was considered by Third Reich doctors when they set up Germany’s racial hygiene programs. German laws were such that if a citizen was one-eighth Jewish, they were eligible to marry a full-blooded German. When Third Reich doctors studied American laws regarding marriage between blacks and whites and subsequently created Germany’s racial hygiene laws, Nazi doctors thought Americans were the ones who were strict. And they studied carefully the sterilization of black women in America’s prisons.

Originally, the German racial hygiene movement, in the late 1800’s, was not as malicious as that of the Nazi era. Believe it or not, when their racial charts were set up, Jews were not excluded from the German ideal but were included in their definition of a superior race. Let’s hope the world grows to understand that a man who has a weakness in one area probably has greater qualities in another. Suellen Ocean is the author of the novel Chimney Fire. Available here:

First We’ll Set Up the Holy Brotherhood… Then We’ll Persecute Everyone Who’s Not Christian

Standard

Ever wonder how the Spanish Inquisition came to be? King Ferdinand married his cousin Isabella and the two of them went about reuniting their kingdom. Problem is… they had a cruel way of going about it. I guess they thought things would be better if everyone in the kingdom was one religion. They eventually succeeded, but at great cost to non-Christians.

Spain had a large Muslim population because for centuries, the country had been ruled by the Moors and there were plenty of Jews because the Moors let them be. But the Christians finally won back the Spanish provinces and the king and queen were dead set on straightening things out… they wanted unity. There were also too many different languages and too much lawlessness. Some districts were ruled by religious leaders, while other regions had developed governments. Ancient Spain was in disarray.

So they brought out the mounted police, the Holy Brotherhood (Santa Hermandad), a police force on horseback who let feudal war lords know who was boss. Then the monarch set up their famous system of inquiry, The Inquisition it was called. They brought people into court and interrogated them. Basically, it was… you’re going to be a Christian. You are not going to pretend you are a Christian; you are really going to be a Christian. And if you’re not, you’ll be expelled from the kingdom. And by the way, on your way out… leave everything here, including your gold. You wealthy Moors and Jews, leave your land to the kingdom, your cattle also stays. And all those agricultural fields and trees you planted? We’ll take that too. Next!

What really made the monarch angry were the Moors and Jews who converted to Catholicism but who weren’t really Christian. They hated that. Imagine the nerve of them, going to church on Sunday but when at home practicing Islam or Judaism. And Christians who didn’t accept the monarch’s idea of what it meant to be a Catholic… they were punished too. Ferdinand and Isabella burned people to death. They tied them to crosses and started fires at their feet. No kidding. That’s one of the reasons why the New World became populated. People were running from serious oppression. Trouble is… the Inquisition followed them. That’s when we see The Mexican Inquisition in the history books. And that’s why there are Catholics who take DNA tests and find out they are Jewish. Well what do you know? Nobody said anything. Would you?

Where Did I Get That Rh-Negative Blood Factor?

Standard

In the early eighth century, a Mohammedan people living in northern Africa, the Moors, took boats and entered Southern Spain. The significant make-up of the Moors was Arabic peoples (meaning they descended from the Arabian Peninsula) and Berbers (from North Africa). The Berbers have a high percentage of Rh-Negative blood in their population, compared to other ethnic groups. Of the many surnames in my family tree, Morris is one of them. It’s quite possible that those with Morris ancestry are descendants of the Moors, who invaded Spain in 711 A.D. The French-Latin for Moor is Maurus and the French Greek is Mauros. Sounds like Morris to me.

If you want another example, an old Webster’s dictionary has the following:

morris, n. More fully morris dance. [From earlier morys, morish, Moorish. See Moor.]

Morris dancing was common in Olde England in pageants and May-day games. The dance could have made its way through Spain and into England. My Morris ancestors are Scots-Irish. I can not speak with them about their oral history. I can though, try to piece together an explanation as to why I have Rh-negative blood.  Suellen Ocean is the author of Secret GenealogyA How-to for Tracing Ancient Jewish Ancestry, Secret Genealogy IIUncovering the Jewish Roots of Our Christian Ancestors and Secret Genealogy III From Jewish Anglo-Saxon Tribes to New France Acadians. Nazis… I Said I Would and I Did

Standard

Blog Size Chimney Fire Front Cover

Today I humbly present my novel, Chimney Fire. The main character is a Jewish fellow named Rudy Steinberg, a California slacker who at fifty is paid a visit by a German attorney whose shocking information disrupts Rudy’s life. I came up with the idea twenty years ago and when I found the outline, I thought it would be fun to collaborate with my younger self. Fun is not the correct word. I spent the winter reading and watching films about Nazis who murdered millions of people, including Germans. Nevertheless, I said I would and I did. It’s spring now… and Chimney Fire is complete. I can’t say that I understand human nature any better but what I do understand is that people do bad things and we need to speak up because as the victims will tell you… the worst is unthinkable. “Chimney Fire” is available here: http://www.amazon.com/Chimney-Fire-Steinberg-Conspiracy-Book-ebook/dp/B00XDCPLEW
