Polish King “Casimir the Great” Welcomed Jews

European rulers during the Middle Ages were not particularly tolerant of religious movements other than their own. There were Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Pagans. Europe had quite a diverse medieval religious population. When Jews were mistreated and expelled from many parts of Europe, they longed for peace and security. Along came Polish King, Casimir the Great in the middle 1300’s. He welcomed the Jews. They immigrated to Poland from Italy, Spain, France, England, Germany and Bohemia. No doubt when the Nazis rounded up Poland’s Jews and escorted them to their deaths, many were the descendants of Jews who had many years before, accepted the welcome hospitality of King Casimir.
