Genealogy: Finding the Ethnicity of Adopted Ancestors

Standard

It’s a tough road for a genealogist who has an ancestor who was adopted. You may not have a clue which way to look, but instinct tells me not to rule out, that they could have been one of thousands of Jews who left Russia in the late 1800’s and immigrated to America. These Jews had been heavily persecuted and confined to a tough geographical region known as the “Pale of Settlement,” where due to overcrowding, there was disease and destitution. The Russian government used young Jewish men as soldiers, demanding they serve in the Russian army. This led to large numbers of Jews immigrating to America in the 1870’s when very young Jewish boys were expected to join the Russian army. Many of these immigrants could easily have been sent by loving parents to save them from a cruel fate. Ports in Texas were often where these young Jewish boys wound up, far away from familiar Jewish culture.
