Genealogy: Defining “Jewish”

Standard

If you’re lucky enough to trace your ancestry back to Biblical days, you’re miles ahead of most genealogists. If you trace back to the ancient Jews, you may find that you trace to another tribe like the Babylonians, Assyrians or Persians. In 636 B.C.E., a Persian ruler named Cyrus the Great, conquered Babylonia where many Jews had been taken captive in 586 B.C.E. Cyrus freed the Jews and they fulfilled their dream of returning to Jerusalem. This brought about a new era. The name “Jews” was no longer exclusive to the tribe of Judah but to everyone who adhered to the Hebrew religion. This could be why some who carry the rh-negative blood factor, not common in the general Jewish population but carried by ancient Iranian (Persian) Jews, shows up in your family. Just a thought. Perhaps 2,000 years ago, one of your Persian ancestors accepted the Jewish faith.
