Inquisitional Arrests of Mexican Jews

When the Spanish Inquisition came to the New World, it extended into Mexico and became the Mexican Inquisition. The Mexican Inquisition brought with it continued persecution of the Jews. One was arrested if they lacked the necessary certificate, Pureza de la sangre, which translated means “purity of the blood,” proving that one was not Jewish. With the threat of arrest, it’s no wonder many Sephardic Jews in the New World hid their ethnic roots. The abundance of Old Testament names amongst the Latin community leaves evidence of a religion and culture much loved by those who were forced to abandon it.
