The Tax Man Who Became a Saint


Matthew, the fellow who wrote the Gospel, one of four “Gospels” in the bible was also a Jewish tax collector. Matthew believed that Jesus was the Messiah and legend has it that he was “called” by Jesus. Scholars take writings and analyze them and discover that books of the Bible were not written by one author but by several, Matthew is one of those authors. But what I find interesting is that Mathew’s Gospel was directed not at Christians but at Jews, because Matthew was a Jew trying to convince other Jews that Jesus was the messiah.
