Christianity & Judaism: Who Was Joseph?

There are many Josephs but two are quite prominent in biblical history. The first is Joseph the son of Jacob. (The twelve tribes of Israel are all the descendants of Jacob, whose name later became Israel.) Joseph’s brothers were jealous of him and sold him as a slave. You’ll find the story of Joseph’s time in Egypt in the book of Genesis (37, 39-50).

The other well-known Joseph was the husband of Mary, Mother of Jesus. This Joseph was a descendant of King David remembered today throughout the world in the Star of David. Like Jesus, Joseph was a carpenter. The name Joseph means, “may he add.”
